Frequently Asked Questions

What is a meat “share”?

A share is a whole, half or quarter of an animal which is butchered and packaged.

How much freezer space will I need for a meat share?

A rule of thumb is to plan 1 cubic foot of freezer space per 35-40 lbs. of packaged meat. For example, the take home packaged meat for our quarter beef is approximately 100 lbs. So you would need approximately three cubic feet of freezer space.

How much meat will I receive in a meat share?

This depends on several things - first, the finishing weight of each animal, and every animal finishes differently; second, how you choose to have it cut. The following are approximations of how much meat to expect:

  • Whole Beef Share: 420 lbs.

  • Half Beef Share: 210 lbs.

  • Quarter Beef Share: 105 lbs.

  • Whole Pork Share: 140 lbs.

  • Half Pork Share: 70 lbs.

What should I expect when I buy meat from Section 32 Farms?

When you buy individual cuts, bundles, or chickens from us, we will arrange for an on-farm pick-up.

When you buy a meat share from us, you can expect the following process:

  1. We deliver the live animal directly to the butcher for processing.

  2. We will reach out to you near the butcher date to provide you with a timeframe and the butcher’s contact information.

  3. You should contact the butcher as soon as you hear from us, with your cutting instructions. All our butchers have a standard cut list you can follow. The butcher will walk you through each type of cut available and provide recommendations if you ask. If you want special cuts, you need to ask for this upfront. It is your responsibility to contact the butcher. If they do not hear from you, they will cut your meat using their standard cut list and you will be subject to whatever cuts they choose.

  4. The butcher will reach out to you when the meat is ready for pick-up. Beef is normally 10-14 days from the butcher date. Pork is normally a day or two. It is your responsibility to pick-up your meat timely or make arrangements with the butcher. Butchers have limited freezer space available to hang onto fully processed meat.

  5. Most butchers will have some packaging on hand to use for transporting your meat home (bags, boxes, etc.); however, we recommend taking some of your own just in case.

  6. You will pay processing and butcher fees directly to the butcher when you go to pick-up your meat.

How much money total should I expect to pay for a meat share?

You will pay Section 32 Farms for the meat share and processing costs to the butcher. There are several factors for final pricing - the final hanging weight of each animal and how you have your meat cut. Butcher costs are subject to change. The following are approximations of cost for each meat share:

  • Whole Beef Share:

    • Sec. 32 Farms Cost: $2760

    • Butcher Cost: $500

  • Half Beef Share

    • Sec. 32 Farms Cost: $1460

    • Butcher Cost: $300

  • Quarter Beef Share

    • Sec. 32 Farms Cost: $772

    • Butcher Cost: $200

  • Whole Pork Share:

    • Sec. 32 Farms Cost: $800

    • Butcher Cost: $300

  • Half Pork Share:

    • Sec. 32 Farms Cost: $450

Pricing is subject to change.

Do you ship meat?

Not at this time. Part of our mission is to focus on being local and sustainable. We believe in minimize our footprint as much as possible. If proximity is an issue, we’re always happy to recommend a fellow regenerative farmer closer to you, who shares similar practices and beliefs. We continue to monitor and research packaging and shipping solutions and would consider offering it in the future if it meets all our requirements.
