The Start of the Beginning

Well it’s officially official - here’s Section 32 Farms. Our website. Our name. Our logo. To Joe and I, the farm has been official in our hearts and minds for a lot longer. But once you file paperwork for a business name, or cement wooden posts into the ground, or set price lists for beef packages, or set a butcher date, it really becomes real. And exciting. I wouldn’t say nerve-racking; we’re filled with anticipation of all that’s going to happen this year. We know it will be filled with learning curves. We’ve never done most of this! Including birthing calves, which I have a whole new appreciation for after giving birth to our first child this fall.

This spring promises to be a busy time, which it always is, but full of lots of new tasks. We’ll still be planting some corn and soybeans this year as we work to transition the farm into more of a natural and sustainable system. But we’ll be looking at ways we can change it to align with our mission and values.

Alongside this, we’ll be finishing our pasture fencing, building a structure to protect the cattle when the weather is bad or when a cow is giving birth, and then finally getting the cattle! I’m sure that will be a whole other level of real to us - when that first steer takes its first step into the pasture and eats a mouthful of grass. Music to our ears!

While we’ve been talking about Section 32 to friends, family and anyone else that will listen, maybe you’re reading this not sure of who we are or what we’re about. This is at the heart of what we’re doing and how we’re moving forward on the farm. So I’d encourage you to take a look at our About page for now. I’ll be back to dive deeper into all the areas of the heart of the farm, share stories and learning opportunities, and just funny anecdotes of our adventures.

Thanks for coming along on this journey with us.
