Babies, babies, babies!

We have a love-hate relationship with spring. We hate all the mud that makes a mess of the pasture and the wide varying temperatures that keeps us on our toes through the summer. But we love how things come alive in the spring and the hope it inspires. Anything feels possible in springtime.

This spring we welcomed four new baby calves on to the farm. It was an early spring calving, which meant all kinds of weather - snow, rain, wind. But everybody did great and all four mamas and calves are doing great.

Along with our baby calves, we also have our first batch of baby chicks that arrived at the beginning of April. It’s certainly baby fever over at the farm right now.

And that goes for more than just the animals! That’s right - we’re growing our little family by one this fall! We’re all over the moon about this baby, especially Charley.

Adding a new baby during one of the busiest times of year on the farm will certainly have its challenges, but that’s nothing new. If there’s one thing farming has taught us is how to stay flexible. Having a plan is good, but you have to be able to roll with what happens. There will be lots of curves and unexpected twists, but we know there’s nothing we can’t face together. Bring on the new adventures!

And this week the mud is finally manageable enough and the grass in the pasture had grown enough that we could finally put the cattle out to graze the fresh grass along with their supply of dry hay. We’ve been keeping them restricted to the dryer parts of the pasture through these really rainy, muddy weeks. While that piece is tore up pretty good, it protected the rest of the pasture and we’ll reseed it. We can just see that the grass is ready to start growing like crazy. And everybody, us and the cattle alike, are sure ready for it.

Happy Spring!
